Full Day Birdwatching
São Miguel

Situated in the middle of the Atlantic, the Azores Islands are a refuge passing point for hundreds of migratory species, being also the most important nesting site worldwide of Cory's shearwaters and Roseate terns.

Among the 30 species nesting throughout the archipelago, on the island of São Miguel we can find one of the rarest species in Europe, the Azores bullfinch.

This activity serves both for beginners and to experienced birdwatchers that seek to observe and know the birds of our island.

The departure is early and towards Nordeste, to take advantage of one of the periods of greater activity of the most singular bird of te island of São Miguel: the Azorean bullfinch.

Being one of the last and most extensive and important nucleus of native vegetation in São Miguel, the Serra da Tronqueira (in Nordeste) houses a precious collection of botanical endemisms. Associated with these, it is also possible to observe great part of the passerines endemic to the Azores, which evolved alongside with the Laurisilva forest, one of them being the Azorean bullfinch.

After the picnic lunch, the next stop will be in village of Povoação in order to observe birds along the coast. In addition to gulls and terns, it is also possible to observe waders and herons.

On the way to Ponta Delgada, a stop is made in the Furnas Lake for a stroll through the banks that allows the observation of several species of birds from holarctic origin, of various groups, with emphasis on some species of Anatidae.

Return to Ponta Delgada is made by the South coast of the island.
